The ANS 2017 End of Year Appeal Is On!

Dear Friend,

Each year at this time I ask all of you who share our passion for numismatics to consider making a donation to the American Numismatic Society, but I do not want you to think this a generalized, abstract request. Since I last made this appeal we have taken great concrete steps toward making our wealth of objects and resources more accessible to everyone with an interest in them, and your support is critically needed if we are to maintain our momentum through 2018.

A major focus for the staff this year was the enhancement of our online databases and the creation of increased engagement opportunities for our members. These efforts include our continuing digitization projects, our upgrades of features for viewing and researching our collections online, and our lecture programs (many of which can be viewed online on our YouTube channel).

This year we were also very pleased to announce a new image-zooming feature in MANTIS, the online database of our numismatic collection, and ARCHER, the Society’s digital archive. The ANS now makes its highest-resolution images freely available under a Creative Commons license, enabling researchers, or any other fascinated party, to zoom down into minute details of an object that were obscured in the lower-resolution images previously published. More than 160,000 objects have been photographed thus far and are available in this new interface. Beyond MANTIS, the high-resolution images of Hellenistic coins and Roman Republican and Imperial coins will likewise soon be available in our PELLA, CRRO (Coinage of the Roman Republic Online), and OCRE (Online Coinage of the Roman Empire) databases, respectively.

I thank all of you who have given generously over the past year and demonstrated your support of the Society. But I urge you to please make an additional gift now, by December 31st, and help us reach the end of 2017 with a major boost. Your tax-deductible donation to the ANS will help to secure our footing for the coming twelve months.
